EF coaching is not tutoring.

We don’t work on the assignment. We work on how you get to the assignment: planning, starting, tracking, following through, and what to do when you’re stuck.

If what you actually need is subject help — someone to sit down and work through the algebra or the essay itself — coaching is the wrong tool, and the discovery call will say so and point you somewhere better.

Who It’s For

Two audiences, two versions of the work

Coaching is the same method either way. What changes is who sets the goal, what a session looks like, and who else is in the loop.

For adults

Professionals, creatives, and late-diagnosed ADHDers

You already know what needs doing. The gap is between knowing and starting — and it costs you deadlines, evenings, and a fair amount of self-respect.

  • Pick the friction point that’s actually expensive: task initiation, planning, follow-through, time estimation.
  • Build one system small enough to survive a bad week, then test it against real life.
  • Review what happened without the moral commentary, and revise.
  • You set the goals. Nobody reports to a parent or a school.

Common asks: work projects that stall at 80%, inbox and admin backlog, chronic lateness, starting the thing you care most about.

For students

High school and college students building independence

Coaching works on the scaffolding around schoolwork, not the schoolwork. If the grades are slipping because the material is genuinely hard, a tutor is the right call — often alongside coaching, sometimes instead of it.

  • Get every assignment, test, and due date into one place the student will actually open.
  • Break long assignments into starts — the first ten minutes, not the finished essay.
  • Build a homework routine that fits the real afternoon, including practice and a phone.
  • Parents get a monthly check-in on systems and progress. Session content stays with the student.

Common asks: missing-assignment lists, all-nighters before every test, “I forgot I had it,” the jump to college workload.

Coaching primarily serves adults and students from about 9th grade up. For younger students, or when the school system itself is the problem, the educational specialist lane is usually the better fit.

Session Structure

How sessions run

  • Weekly, one hour, remote. That’s the default and it’s what most clients stay on.
  • In-person is North County San Diego only. Everywhere else is video, which works fine and is what the majority of clients use.
  • Light async between sessions. A message when a system breaks mid-week beats waiting seven days to mention it.
  • Rates are discussed on the discovery call. Existing clients keep their current rate.

Cadence can flex — biweekly during steady stretches, twice weekly through a crunch — but weekly is the default because EF systems need a short feedback loop to get corrected before they quietly fall apart.

ExEF + Referral Network

One coach. A short list of independent referrals.

ExEF is a solo coaching practice. The educational and clinical practitioners below are independent contractors and recommended referrals — not ExEF employees. Listing them keeps licensing, liability, and scope-of-practice lines clean while giving you a vetted name to call when coaching isn’t the right tool.

Check every statement that fits. We'll suggest a coach, an educational specialist, or an occupational therapist - or tell you when a quick consult is the faster path.

Pick as many as apply. None are weighted - ties get flagged so we don't pretend a 30-second form replaces a real conversation.

None of these lanes replace clinical care. If safety, severe mood instability, active trauma symptoms, or other urgent mental-health concerns are present, work with a licensed clinical provider first — see scope of practice.

  2. Session 2: System Build — one system + action/fallback plan.
  3. Session 3: Real-Life Test — review and revise the system.

Scope and Safety

Coaching scope statement

ExEF provides executive function coaching and practical skills support. Coaching is not tutoring, therapy, diagnosis, medical treatment, occupational therapy assessment, crisis support, or legal/academic accommodation documentation.

Coaching does not cover subject-matter instruction. We do not teach algebra, edit the essay, or sit with a student while they complete the assignment. We work on how the student gets to the assignment.

When needs fall outside coaching, we may recommend support from an appropriate licensed professional.

FAQ

Common questions about the lanes

Most people land on this page asking the same five things. Here are the honest answers.

Is this tutoring?

No. EF coaching is not tutoring. We don't work on the assignment — we work on how you get to the assignment: planning, starting, tracking, following through, and what to do when you're stuck. If the problem is that the material itself is hard, you want a subject tutor, and the discovery call will tell you that rather than sell you a package. Plenty of students run both at once; they do different jobs.

What does a session look like, and where do we meet?

Weekly, one hour, remote by default. In-person sessions are available in North County San Diego only — everywhere else is video, which is what most clients use anyway. Cadence can flex to biweekly or twice weekly, but weekly is the default because systems need correcting before they quietly fall apart.

What does it cost?

Rates are discussed on the discovery call, once we both know what the work actually is. Existing clients keep their current rate. Sliding-scale seats open each quarter — ask during intake.

Do I need coaching, OT, an educational specialist, or therapy?

Coaching builds adult and student systems for follow-through, planning, and time management. An educational specialist owns the school side — IEPs, 504s, accommodations, study routines. OT covers sensory regulation, motor planning, and daily living when the body is the bottleneck. Therapy is required when safety, severe mood instability, or active trauma symptoms are present. The lanes overlap; the “I need…” selector at the top of this page is the fastest way to triage.

How is EF coaching different from therapy?

Coaching is skill-building and implementation work. Therapy is clinical care for diagnosable conditions. ExEF coaches do not diagnose, treat mental-health conditions, or provide psychotherapy. When clinical concerns surface, we refer out. Full scope detail lives on the scope-of-practice page.

Are sessions covered by insurance?

Coaching and educational specialist services are typically not insurance-reimbursable in the US. OT services may be billable depending on plan, state, and presenting concerns - we'll provide a superbill if requested. Sliding-scale seats open each quarter; ask during intake.

Do you serve adults, kids, or both?

Both, but the work looks different — see For adults / For students. Coaching primarily serves adults and students from about 9th grade up. The educational specialist lane covers K-12 and college transition. OT will serve children and adults across the regulation/motor/ADL spectrum when it launches Fall 2026.

Can I switch lanes or run two at once?

Yes - clients may combine coaching with OT or educational specialist work. We coordinate scope so the lanes don't duplicate. The 30-minute consultation is the right place to talk through sequence.
